Organization Overview

SSAB is the largest producer and supplier of heavy plate in North America, with a market share of approximately 32% in 2023. SSAB maintains a strong market position in the energy and heavy transport customer segments. The US accounts for about 85% of sales, Canada 10% and Latin America 5%.

Market drivers
There is a significant need to reinvest in infrastructure in North America. This means several end-user segments, such as heavy fabrication and construction equipment, are expected to improve. Also, demand from wind energy is expected to remain positive, and the outlook for

investment in line pipe projects going forward is also favorable.

SSAB has responsibility for sales of heavy plate in North America and for scrap-based steel and plate production in Mobile, Alabama and Montpelier, and operated three cut-to-length facilities in Houston, Texas, St. Paul, Minnesota and Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In North America, SSAB focuses on a high level of service and quality while maintaining the lowest cost position and the most flexible setup in the market. SSAB works actively to reach a good balance between sales via distributors (currently just over 50% of sales) and end-users. The focus is also on increasing the growth of premium products for the energy and offshore segments as well as for railroads and shipbuilding.

In 2023, the Montpelier, Iowa facility first produced SSAB Zero™, made from recycled steel with nearly zero emissions used during steel production, without mass balancing allocation of emission reduction or carbon emission offsetting. It is being sold to customers in the U.S. and Europe including Volvo, Mercedes, Peab, and more.
